Current evidence indicates that antidepressants increase the risk of suicidal tendencies in children and adolescents, so their use should be limited in this population and used only in authorized indications. This risk is especially due to the increase in suicidal ideation. Indirect evidence shows that the risk of suicidal tendencies would be higher with venlafaxine. There is insufficient evidence that any drug reduces the risk of their occurrence. There is ample evidence that antidepressants increase the risk of serious adverse events and dropouts due to adverse events in any indication compared to placebo. In the available studies, safety is analyzed when treatment is started and they are generally short-term studies, but the risk of this type of adverse events in the longer term cannot be ruled out.
