Pharmacogenetics is a key discipline as regards the personalization of pharmacological therapy as each person is unique and the response to a medication may vary significantly between individuals, occasionally resulting in ineffective of toxic treatments.
This article explores the impact of pharmacogenetics in various therapeutic areas, including cardiology (with drugs such as clopidogrel and statins), oncology (with fluoropyrimidines and irinotecan) and neurology (for antipsychotics, antiepileptics or antidepressants), where genotyping can guide dosing and prevent serious toxicities.
