Menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) is an effective treatment for controlling vasomotor symptoms in peri- and postmenopausal women. The Women’s Health Initiative trials linked the use thereof to a potential increase in cardiovascular risk and breast cancer in MHT users, which led to restrictions on the use of this treatment in postmenopausal women.
The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has recently lifted the restrictions concerning cardiovascular risk and breast cancer due to the use of MHT in women aged 50 to 59 years. However, this decision does not appear to be based on scientific evidence of a 
minimally acceptable quality. The EMA has maintained its warnings regarding these risks. This article reviews the evidence underlying these regulatory decisions.
